Activities to do with your kids over Christmas

Writer's picture: Team RosieTeam Rosie

Christmas is such a special time, especially for children!  There is so much anticipation as the big day gets closer and for when Santa arrives.  There’s lots of festive fun to be had, so make the most of this magical time with your little ones.

That might mean snuggling up with the family for a Christmas movie marathon, cooking up a storm in the kitchen or brushing off the tree decorations and fairy lights.

Have you ever struggled to keep your kids occupied during the holidays?

Team @everythingsrosie have compiled a list of their favourite Christmas activities – from EASY CHRISTMAS CRAFTS to FUN WITH FOOD we’ve got you covered!

Making Christmas Cards

This is a lovely way to let children express their creativity and let their imagination run wild and most materials can be found around the home, which means it’s cost-effective too.

You’ll need some coloured card or paper, child-friendly scissors, glue stick, crayons or colouring pens, glitter, pom poms or scraps of tinsel.  You can even cut images out of old magazines or wrapping paper – such as Christmas trees, stars, holly etc and re-use them by letting your child make their very own Christmas collage!

Christmas Baking

There are lots of ways you can involve children in the Christmas food making and they will love to get stuck in, in the kitchen, not to mention have fun eating what they create!

Christmas Pudding Rice Krispie Cakes from BBC Good Food

All you need are Rice Krispies, raisins, butter, milk chocolate, peanut butter, marshmallows, white chocolate and ready-made cake decorations.  There’s no actual ‘baking’ involved so this is an ideal activity for youngsters to do more independently (with adult supervisor, of course).

Melting Snowman Biscuits from BBC Good Food

Another great recipe from Good Food that kids will love!  Messy, sticky fun for a winter’s day.  You will need cookies (shop bought or homemade), fondant icing sugar, marshmallows, chocolate beans and pretzels.

This is another easy baking activity that doesn’t involve any cooking (unless you decide to make your own cookies).  Recipe can be found here BBC Good Food

Making Mince Pies

There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked mince pies wafting around the house!  Whether you make homemade, or use shop bought pastry, your little ones will love cutting out the circles, filling the pies with mincemeat and making their own festive decorations to go on top.

Write a Letter to Santa

We love keeping this tradition alive!  Encourage your little ones to write or draw a special letter to Santa that they can leave by the fireplace, their bed or post it.  If you send a letter via Royal Mail, your child may even get a reply from the Big Man himself!

Other favourite Christmas activities include:

  • Make and decorate a gingerbread house (there are lots of recipes online and lots of ready made kits available to buy)

  • Go on a festive walk get the family together, wrap up warm, and take everyone out on a festive wintery walk to see all the local Christmas lights and trees

  • Do a Christmas Treasure Hunt a treasure hunt around the house and garden is a great way to burn off all that excess energy in the lead up to Christmas.  Make up some Christmassy clues and send your kids off to find chocolate coins (or other small treats)

  • Make or decorate a Christmas stocking add a personal touch to plain stockings or socks with Christmas shapes, snowflakes, glitter, ribbons or whatever else you have in your sewing box. Be sure to hang them up on Christmas Eve to see what Santa pops in them!

  • Track Santa online here  Once Santa has set off from the North Pole, satellites are used to track his progress and the heat given off from Rudolph’s nose will show your little ones exactly where he is in the world!
